Automated extraction of seed morphological traits from images

The description of biological objects, such as seeds, mainly relies on manual measurements few characteristics, and visual classification structures, both which can be subjective, error prone time-consuming. Image analysis tools offer means to address these shortcomings, but we currently lack a method capable automatically handling seeds from different taxa with varying morphological attributes obtaining interpretable results. Here, provide simple image acquisition processing protocol introduce Traitor, an open-source software available command-line interface (CLI), automates the extraction seed traits images. workflow for trait consists scanning against high-contrast background, correcting colours, analysing images software. Traitor is hundreds varied simultaneously just three commands, without need training, fine-tuning or thresholding. detects each object in extracts size measurements, traditional morphometric descriptors widely used by scientists practitioners, standardised shape coordinates, colorimetric measurements. was tested dataset comprising 91,667 1228 taxa. Traitor's extracted average length width values closely matched obtained same collection (concordance correlation coefficient 0.98). Further, large demonstrate how output obtain representative colours taxa, determine phylogenetic signal colour, build objective categories high levels interpretability.
